BitTorrent Paper Causes Widespread Site Shutdowns

A paper recently published by news site The Register which covers detailed analysis by Dr. Johan Pouwelse appears to have assisted in the widespread shutdown of the larger known BitTorrent sites, such as SuprNova.Org and PheonixTorrents.Com.

BitTorrent apparently (says the paper) is nearly 50% of the P2P (peer to peer) internet traffic around on the internet today and also one of the main sources of illegal films. It would be common sense to assume the closure of this sites has been caused by the recently announced new initiative by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) to start targetting the the BitTorrent and eDonkey file-swapping networks.

There are of course other purposes to BitTorrent such as file swapping legal files from site such as FileRush.com such as game demos and movie trailers. Both of which come is very large file sizes and thus spread the bandwidth across multiple sources which allows a further reach of the files.

Like all things today, not all reason are bad or illegal. Its another case of taking a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Big power hungry company collaborations squashing the small people underfoot with no thought to the full impact of their footsteps. Think back to when Lik-Sang.com were closed down for selling modchips for consoles. They are still here because they argued they made a mistake, but to close them down for a mistake was unfair and extreme.

What are your thoughts on this current big boys rampage?
